I created this web page, not as much for you as for me. I wanted a place to store all my ham radio information, links, etc. This page is the result of my selfish effort. But, isn’t that the essence of the web – to share information?

Feel free to explore, comment and link to this blog. Or, better yet, contribute something!

Commo Support - Bag 2

- 1 or 2 Handheld radios. I recommend 2, preferably of the same type, so you have one if the first one fails or you lose it.
- Spare batteries for the radio(s). See why 2 of the same type is desirable?
- I always have two charger transformers and two cords. These fail often, so you want spares
- A mike for the radio(s). You will find that constantly having to move the mike to your mouth to talk gets tiring. An external mike also allows you to keep the radio on your belt or in your pocket. If the mike has a speaker, which most do, you can keep it near your ear, so you can hea in noisy environments. Again, have a spare.
- Spare antennas
- A few tools

  •    Screwdrivers, both big and little. Flat and Phillips.
  •    Needlenose pliers
  •    Wirecutters
  •    Electricians pliers
  •    A Weatherman or other multi-tool is very handy to have, but you might want to carry it on you
  •    Small multimeter or a non-contact voltage tester
  •    Small flashlight. You might want to have one that uses AA or AAA batteries because charging lithium batteries may be difficult and time consuming.
  •    Role of electrical tape
  •    Small can of WD-40. You will thank me for this one!
  •    Microfiber cloth or 2
  •    A couple of ziplock bags to put radios or batteries in, if you are in a wet environment.
  •    Small notebook, preferably waterproof
  •    Pens & pencils
  •    Roll up J-Pole Antenna - will allow you to communicate over greater distances. Make sure you have any adapters required to connect to the radio
  • String and weight (to hang antenna)

- printed material. Now, I know you will say you can look it up online, but Internet may not be available. All of these should be laminated for obvious reasons.

  •    Repeater directory
  •    User manual for your radio(s) or quick reference guide
  •    The South Carolina Emergency Communications Plan
  •    Any orders or instructions related to the event. They are probably online, but you may not be.
  •    A contact list for the event
  •    Map of the Operations Theater

Can you put this bag in your Go Bag if you have room? Yes, but make sure you put in an external pocket or the top of the Go Bag. You don't want to have to unload your Go Bag to get a battery.
